Meet Richard, Apprentice Technician

Born and raised in Sussex, Richard is now a Level 2 Apprentice Technician at British Airways i360 and has been working here for a year.

Hi Richard! Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

When I was 18, I went to Costa Rica and Nicaragua for a few months to work on community and environmental building projects, laying pipework and installing water pumps. I’ve always liked working hard, so it was really rewarding. After working for my uncle as a general builder for three years, I studied Electrical Installation and Science for two years at Brighton College.

What drew you to the apprenticeship scheme?

My original idea was to become an electrician, but the course opened my eyes to a whole new world – I knew I wanted to work in industry, working on large-scale projects, which is why I started this apprenticeship.

If you like working with your hands, apprenticeships are the best way to learn new skills and getting your foot in the door in this industry, especially as you need qualifications to work on any kind of heavy machinery. It’s hands on learning and a stepping stone into the industry.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

Definitely working with my colleagues, learning new skills. The brilliant team of technicians here have varied backgrounds, so I’ve been able to tap into each of their minds individually and learn lots of things from them. We all get along really well, and I can ask them anything about work, or life in general. We work on preventative maintenance very early in the morning before the first flights, so I am fortunate enough to have some time to work on my NVQs during the afternoon.

What do you plan to do after you complete your apprenticeship?

I’ll have a Level 3 NVQ in Maintaining Electrical and Mechanical Systems, so I’d like to continue using my skills I’ve learnt in the industry.

Thank you Richard!
