British Airways i360 joins #2minutebeachclean campaign

From 5th June, a #2minutebeachclean station will be placed outside the British Airways i360 site; an A board with litter pickers and reused plastic bags, aiming to encourage beachgoers to keep the beach tidy.

The campaign, started by beach-lover Martin Dorey in 2014, aims to make it simple for everyone to ‘do their bit’ by litter picking for two minutes when visiting the beach, then placing the litter into nearby waste bins.



Participants are encouraged to take photos of their beach cleans and share them on social media, using the hash tag #2minutebeachclean, to spread knowledge and enthusiasm for conservation.

#2minutebeachclean stations will also be placed outside the Seafront Office the World Cetacean Alliance and Molly’s Coffee shop at Rottingdean Beach. These three stations were funded in a joint initiative by the council, Surfers Against Sewage and local sustainable design studio Claire Potter Design.

Seafront Officer Charles Branson said: “Growing up on the beaches of Cornwall, I have had it instilled in me to care for the coastal environment since a child, and I find it quite upsetting to see the state the beaches are left in after a sunny weekend.


“Brighton and Hove has so many passionate, environmentally conscious local people but sadly there are many more who aren’t so diligent and are unaware of the potential harm to other beach users, marine wildlife and the environment.

“We hope #2minutebeachclean may go some way in reducing the impact of our annual summer beach litter crisis and that we as a city can provide more stations as the summer progresses.”

A British Airways i360 spokesperson said: “We are proud to be joining forces with other seafront businesses to participate in the #2minutebeachclean campaign, as part of our shared ambition to care for the natural landscape around us.”
